The
Lovers of Teruel
Diego de Marcilla and Isabel de Segura
are childhood lovers. As they grow up their love becomes stronger and stronger. Diego
is desperate to marry Isabel, but Isabel’s father, doubting Diego’s
ability to provide for his daughter, tells him to ask again only when he has the
wealth necessary to support her. An agreement is made: Diego will seek
his fortune in the Crusades and Isabel will wait faithfully for him for
five years. But, during these five years, while Diego is away fighting, Isabel’s father
breaks the bargain. He tells Isabel that he now wants her to marry the powerful Pedro Fernández de Azagra. Isabel stubbornly
refuses
but as the five years draw to a close, in despair she
realises that she will have to marry the new suitor her father has found.
Preparations are made for a grand wedding on the very last day of the
agreed five years. It is precisely on this day that Diego comes back to Teruel.
Just after the wedding ceremony, he
manages to see Isabel alone and asks for one last kiss. She refuses
saying that she is now a married woman...
