IN THE SPOTLIGHT
No1:
Popacatapetal now heard in Spain
Popacatapetal, the
mountain, exploded in Mexico on 22nd January 2001 at 22:15. Popacatapetal,
the band, can now be heard reverberating all around Altea la Vieja in Spain
after the arrival there on the 11th September of C-Squared Trucking's
removal client, Peter Risdale.
Surprisingly for the neighbours, Peter's removal truck emptied out not the
usual collection of designer furniture seen in the big executive homes high
up in the hills overlooking the bays of Altea and, further South, Calpe.
Rather, a strange collection of instruments including a harmonium, marching
drums, a vibraphone and several violins disappeared into the house. Then
came a more easily recognisable stream of recording and gigging equipment.
Who could tell what kind of weird and wonderful sounds these things would
induce, produce or reproduce?
Peter himself could not be sure. How could he continue to record and play
live Popacatapetal's unique style of Latin traditional music overlaid with
wry contemporary lyrics originally performed by a large band of upwards of
six semi-professional musicians all of whom, except Peter, had had to remain
in the UK?
Only time will tell. Meanwhile all glockenspiel players in the Altea area
should watch this space...
